Digital Citizenship: Be Smart, Be Safe, Be Kind
Digital Citizenship: Be Smart, Be Safe, Be Kind

At the BSCD, we recognise that today’s children are growing up in a fast-paced digital world. From online learning to social gaming, digital devices are part of everyday life—and that brings both opportunities and challenges. Our job is to help children navigate this world safely, smartly and kindly.

What is Digital Citizenship?

Digital Citizenship is about teaching children how to use technology responsibly. It includes knowing how to:

  • Stay safe online
  • Communicate kindly and respectfully
  • Manage screen time and online distractions
  • Spot fake news and think critically about what they see
  • Protect personal information
  • Balance tech use with offline life

Our Approach

We use the award-winning Common Sense Education Digital Citizenship Curriculum—a trusted, research-backed programme designed for schools. It offers engaging, age-appropriate lessons for every year group, covering real-world topics that matter to children now.

Each year, all primary pupils take part in a sequence of six Digital Citizenship lessons, which grow with them as they move through school. The curriculum is interactive, discussion-based and linked to real life, helping children to build lifelong digital habits.

Assemblies & Events

We reinforce these lessons through assemblies, where children reflect on key themes like kindness online, privacy, and making good choices. Older pupils lead presentations and discussions, helping to build a culture of shared responsibility. We also hold special events such as our Digital Superheroes STEAM Day, giving pupils a chance to explore digital safety and creativity through teamwork, storytelling, and innovation.

Working with Families

We believe digital citizenship starts at home as well as in school. That’s why we:

  • Send home Family Tech Planners to encourage conversations at home
  • Share Family Activities via Tapestry
  • Invite parents to be part of the DCE Families Unite Committee, helping shape how we support digital learning across the school

Our Goal

We’re working towards becoming a Common Sense Recognised School, a badge of honour that celebrates our commitment to preparing children for life in the digital age.

Together—school, families, and children—we can build a generation of digital citizens who are smart, safe, and kind.
